New News by the Centre for Advancing Journalism is a three-day series looking at the present and future of journalism – and an exploration of the most up-to-the-moment developments in how journalism and the media can create and support engaged citizenship.
Exchange ideas directly with the industry’s most respected professionals. Panellists this year will represent mastheads both new and established – including the Age, Herald Sun, Saturday Paper, Crikey and Junkee. You’ll also hear from prominent bloggers, freelancers and media entrepreneurs. They’ll be joined by leading journalism researchers from Swinburne University of Technology and the Centre for Advancing Journalism at the University of Melbourne.
Expect a varied feast of topics. We’ll cover media start-ups and youth media upstarts; branded content and protected sources; the role of reportage, from arts critics to whistleblowers; the representation of Indigenous peoples; and even more beyond.
Designed for seasoned journalists, news junkies, emerging reporters and anyone who’s curious and passionate about how the public is informed, New News offers a unique opportunity to connect with debates about modern journalism through a programme of discussions, workshops and panels that address the question of why journalism matters – and how to do it better.
New News is presented in partnership with the Wheeler Centre and the Centre for Advancing Journalism at the University of Melbourne.
