Maleonn is among China’s best known contemporary conceptual artists, and also the son of accomplished artists. His mother, Tong Zhengwei, was an actress and his father, Ma Ke, was the artistic director of the Shanghai Chinese Opera Theatre. The award-winning documentary from director S. Leo Chiang, Our Time Machine, is an exploration of creativity, memory and mortality with this exceptional artistic family at its centre.
After Maleonn learns of his father’s Alzheimer’s disease diagnosis in 2014, he begins an intricate and ambitious creative project in the hope of preserving his family’s memories. Our Time Machine follows the artist as he builds life-size mechanical puppets, and mounts a magical, autobiographical stage performance with the puppets as stars.
Join us for a screening of Our Time Machine at the Capitol Theatre followed by a conversation with the director, Chiang, about the mechanisms of memory and artistic transcendence. Hosted by Beverley Wang.
Presented in partnership with AIDC, Asia TOPA and ACMI.
